Canadian-Ukrainian professor and a first-hand observer of Maidan will discuss its global dimensions with Ukraine experts

Maidan put Ukraine on the world map and made the country’s strategic importance more prominent across Europe, the Middle East and Eurasia. Following Maidan, Ukraine has become the face of the struggle against Russian aggression. 

British-Ukrainian Aid has invited a witness to the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity to share his insight in conversation with two academics specialising in Ukraine.

Canadian-Ukrainian professor MYCHAILO WYNNYCKYJ lived through the Maidan events in Kyiv which inspired his recent book “Ukraine’s Maidan, Russia’s War”, while Dr OLESYA KHROMEYCHUK has extensively researched the military conflict in the Donbas. They’ll share their views on Ukraine’s transformation and its impact on the world with Professor ANDREAS UMLAND, leading international expert on Ukraine.

This webinar is dedicated to the 7th Anniversary of the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine. A book launch of the first volume of the “Ukrainian Voices” series – “Ukraine’s Maidan, Russia’s War” – will be followed by a panel discussion.

ABOUT “UKRAINE’S MAIDAN, RUSSIA’S WAR”

This book provides a chronicle of Ukraine’s Maidan and Russia’s on-going war and puts forth an analysis of the Revolution of Dignity from the perspective of a participant observer.In early 2014, Ukrainians rose up against a deeply corrupt, Moscow-backed regime. The Maidan protesters proclaimed their right to a dignified existence; they learned to organise, to act collectively and to become a civil society. Most prominently, they established a new Ukrainian identity: territorial, inclusive and present-focused with powerful mobilising symbols, where “Dignity” and “fairness” became rallying cries for millions. When Russia invaded, illegally annexing Crimea and then feeding continuous military conflict in the Donbas, Ukrainians responded with a massive volunteer effort and patriotism.

The author of the foreword is Serhii Plokhy, Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University.

PANELLISTS

MYCHAILO WYNNYCKYJ is associate professor of sociology at the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and holds a cross-appointment to Lviv Business School of Ukrainian Catholic University. He was awarded a PhD in economic sociology in 2003 from the University of Cambridge. During the 2013–2014 Maidan protests and during the early years of Russian aggression in the Crimea and Donbas Wynnyckyj was a regular commentator for English-language media outlets and provided analysis on current events in his ‘Thoughts from Kyiv’ blog. Since 2015, Mychailo has served as advisor to Ukraine’s minister of education and science. Born in Canada, he has lived in Kyiv since 2003.

OLESYA KHROMEYCHUK is a historian of east-central Europe and a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London.

 

Her research focuses on the participation of women in military formations during the Second World War and in the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region. She received her PhD in History in 2011 from University College London. She is the author of “‘Undetermined’ Ukrainians. Post-War Narratives of the Waffen SS ‘Galicia’ Division” (Oxford: Peter Lang, 2013). Dr Khromeychuk is currently the Director of the Ukrainian Institute London.

ANDREAS UMLAND, Dr. Phil. (FU Berlin), Ph. D. (Cambridge), is a Senior Expert at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future in Kyiv, a Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs in Stockholm and general editor of the “Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society” book series published by ibidem Press at Stuttgart. He’s also responsible for collecting the “Ukrainian Voices” series in which Mychailo’s book appeared.

ABOUT “UKRAINIAN VOICES” BOOK SERIES

The “Ukrainian Voices” book series includes English- and German-language monographs, edited volumes, document collections and anthologies of articles authored and composed by Ukrainian politicians, intellectuals, activists, officials, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, and diplomats.

The series aims to introduce Western and broader audiences to Ukrainian explorations and interpretations of historic and current domestic as well as international affairs.

The purpose of these books is to familiarise non-Ukrainian readers with how some prominent Ukrainians approach, research and assess their country’s development and position in the world. The series was founded in 2019, and the volumes are collected by Andreas Umland.
